A light that flickers when the washing machine starts, a socket that feels warm, or a fuse box that trips repeatedly are not household quirks to ignore. Knowing how to spot faulty wiring can help you act before a minor defect becomes an electric shock, a damaging outage or a fire risk. The safest response is never to investigate behind a socket or consumer unit yourself. Notice the signs, reduce risk where you can, and arrange for a qualified electrician to test the installation.
Common signs of faulty wiring
Electrical faults do not always announce themselves with sparks. More often, the warning signs are intermittent and easy to dismiss, particularly in older homes, rented properties and busy commercial premises.
Repeated tripping at the consumer unit
A circuit breaker or RCD is designed to switch off when it detects a fault or an unsafe imbalance in the circuit. One trip after plugging in a known faulty appliance may have a simple explanation. Repeated tripping, however, needs professional attention - especially when it happens with different appliances, after rain, or whenever a particular light or socket circuit is used.

High-demand appliances such as washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers and portable heaters should have suitable supplies rather than sharing an overloaded extension block.
Test RCDs using the test button at intervals recommended by the manufacturer, but remember that a successful button test does not prove the entire installation is fault-free. If you are unsure which device protects which circuit, or a test button does not operate as expected, ask an electrician to check it.
A dependable electrical installation should fade into the background: lights work, sockets remain cool and protective devices do their job without repeated intervention.
